The Club
SUMBC is a club of 50+ members. There are twice weekly local rides, regular social events as well as trips further a field (Afan, Coed Y Brenin, Morzine etc) and trips to participate in races too.
We cater for all levels of riders and all styles (cross-country, downhill, freeride and leisure riding).
How To Join
The best thing to do is join us outside the union at 2pm on either a Wednesday or Sunday (Sunday rides change to 1pm during the Winter). You're welcome to come along on a few rides before joining. During fresher's week we can be found at the bunfight in the extreme sports section too.
You don't need to have tried mountain biking before either, we usually split into groups for the more experienced and the beginners so no one will be out of their depth. All you need is a mountain bike and a helmet. For our weekly rides we go to the local riding spot, Lordswood (about 15 minutes ride from the uni). We'll show you what the club is all about and make sure you all enjoy yourselves. We sometimes stop off at the pub after rides as well, keep checking here and sign up to our mailing list for more info.
I've put together a gallery of photos from last years SUMBC rides, socials and races and Loz has created a video of the club in action in Lordswood so take a look at both of them.
Don't forget to sign up to our forums and introduce yourself.
Membership
Recreational membership costs £10 per year and full membership costs £25. You can always upgrade your membership later in the year.
Recreational membership includes the ability to attend rides, socials and a discount at The Hub. Full membership includes all of the above plus the ability to attend trips and races.
You should get most of your club membership fee back in the form of subsidised trips, races and club kit etc. You will also be added to our email list upon joining.
You also need to be a member of the Athletic Union which costs £5 per club, per year. This is paid at the same time as the club subscription. The AU membership entitles you to personal accident insurance whilst riding with the club and allows you to claim for race fees should you wish to compete.
You can download the membership form in two versions, one for lifetime AU members (you will know who you are) HERE and one for everyone else (pretty much everyone) HERE. Just hand it along with payment to one of the committee members or leave it in our club pigeon hole.
Mailing List
You can subscribe to the email list and receive regular updates by sending "subscribe" to susu-sumbc-request@lists.soton.ac.uk
